Went to see wicked at the weekend with Chloe. She really loved it. Unfortunately, put me in a room with the lights turned down and a bit stuffy, and roll out the ballads, and the old eyelids start going. Oops.
Well, I don’t think I fell asleep - but the first half was a lot of setting up of the plot. Second half was great - some memorable numbers, and quite a clever tie-in of the original Oz story - think Rosencrantz & Guilderstern with a more recent reference and lots of green. Possibly one of those that would be better on a second viewing with more than four hours sleep the previous night.
Thought the metal dragon was a bit crap and pointless if I’m honest.
I can imagine this one being a popular choice for amateur dramatic societies once it gets off the big stage.
Only slight annoyance was the indecipherable warbling of Galinda - appropriate to the character, but unpleasant. And the witch was from the school of Minnie Mouse singing. It’s a particular stage style that seems to be in vogue amongst the younger generation of players, so I can only assume it’s being taught in stage schools. Probably a Mountview graduate! Went to see a review (revue?) from there a few years back and that seemed to be the prevalent style. Ho hum. All things must pass - hopefully soon, and into a ravine. Think echoey nasal tones disappearing to a tiny phut! and teeny tiny cloud…
Really nice noodle bar on Victoria Road near Argos as well. Big portions, good quality food, small prices - two main meals and two drinks for less than £15. Can’t say fairer than that.
