The time when you said I was fat I felt anger and shame But mostly I thought "Fuck that" But when the plane belt barely met With a perceived public shame Devoid of anger and blame This is what made me snap Awake, and measuring calories I do better than acquiring values. And somehow my private potterings Are more real than a mirror's light You see, these small calorific jottings Work better than your marital bite Simon Huggins, 30th May 2019
My watch is near discharged Our calendar an empty hook The clock ticks on unwatched The light seems undercooked A cool refrigerated hum Is warmed by road tire hiss My heart meets hurried breathing And now, of course, the kiss Simon Huggins, 30th May 2019
I watch you across the table You watch me back Not a steady gaze But your eyes like a viper tongue Reaching for reactions To the half-lies you land But your slight smile fails to hide Your chosen ignorance The panic of slander An ear-trumpet from your boss And a megaphone to us. There's a gentle soul there That you are trying to protect But it's a hibernating bear Pawing dreams of respect Simon Huggins, 30th May 2019
You are like your sister Just a little Like your mother The bit you can't see Like your father Almost in your entirety Like yourself An amalgam of posterity Genetically illustrative Of just how hard it is to be A scribble of individuality. Simon Huggins, 30th May 2019
#sixwordstory #hemingwaychallenge Four ales. Baby blues. Husband gorn. Simon Huggins, 30th May 2019
Midnight is where you meet me I hear your voice, but only fleetingly Like crackles from the memory of a radio I feel your words, breathing A conch-shell promise, waves discreetly. I am middle-aged too, now You, of course, never were Except briefly, incredulity I deferred the row. And now you speak, as midnight flashes A perspiring moment that never lasts But my eyelids flicker Your voice like quavers Staccato, Static Gone. Simon Huggins, 26th May 2019
The very same bed where my toy cars were kept With Danny the Defending bear I sat cross-legged, cornered by the letter A I ate no ants, but you scoured your account Bare pickings for a coat, I leapt Paper to air. Matches struck there. I hated that coat Why did you not ask? Those pickings will rot unaware You are there. I burn and I burn Fanning it out with my coat. I see you aware No power is here And so the beatings began Again, I pulled to my curl As I hid my head down And let all your anger rain down And then at the end Acceptance again That nothing was changed anyhow And back to the bed The A's are still there With Danny the Defending Bear Aardvarks and Aasvogels Aasvogels Aardvarks These friends will always be there. Simon Huggins, 26th May 2019
We talked poetry You wandered the dance floor For sex, to fill a void You showed me Clouds and Escape I said you were lost Wanting to find a way out; A kindness, I thought Many weeks passed Until a knock on my door "Come In, Come In" You pirouetted into my room I sat watching, confused You sat on my bed "Do you want to see my dick?" you asked. Your drug-addled soul, emboldened by love "Not yours," all kindness voided that day. You mumbled retreat. "Fair enough," you said. I could have said, "I don't do dicks." But instead it was you, Specifically you, Head in the clouds Go away. Simon Huggins, 26th May 2019
You lick the sweat Of a hard day's work Salt stains my shirt You snap a pretzel Between your teeth Wine forms a bead On your lip Drops to your hip I lick my lips You smile. "It's been a while." Simon Huggins, 25th May 2019
I looked to find babes With hope in their hearts I found old mad men Who exhaled only farts They were wrapped in old flags That were tattered with holes They had walked many miles In shoes with no soles They were told that once They had walked with the gods Those gods became dust Their graves now well robbed Sadly I wrapped The men in their flags And watched from a plane Explaining our path The world has new gods Where tourists own flags The rights that you blurt Is a world sandwich bag I watch your mouth slur A plan long gone wrong But death does not wait The world just moves on.
